Golf Weight Shift: How to Transfer Weight in the Downswing
If you've been told you "hang back" or "don't use the ground," you have a weight-shift problem. A proper shift — loading into your trail side going back, then firing into your lead side coming down — is where effortless power and crisp contact actually come from.
Pressure vs. weight: the mental model
Think of it as pressure moving through your feet. In a good swing: at the top, most of your pressure is in your trail foot (right foot for a righty); by impact, it has moved decisively into your lead foot, and your hips have rotated open. That sequence — shift, then rotate — is the engine of the downswing.
What poor weight shift looks like
- Hanging back: pressure stays on the trail foot at impact — a classic cause of thin and fat shots (see topping the ball).
- The slide: hips push toward the target without rotating, which stalls the club and can flip the hands.
- Reverse pivot: weight goes toward the target on the backswing and back on the downswing — exactly backwards.
Drills to groove the shift
1. The step-through drill
Start with feet together. As you start the downswing, step your lead foot toward the target, then swing through. It's almost impossible to hang back — you physically transfer into the lead side, the way you'd throw a ball.
2. Pressure under the lead foot
Make slow swings and consciously feel your lead heel press into the ground as you start down. That downward push is "using the ground" — it's what lets the hips rotate and the club drop.
3. Finish in balance
Hold your finish with almost all your weight on your lead foot and your trail toe lightly tapping the ground. If you can't hold it, your weight didn't fully transfer. A balanced finish is a reliable sign the shift happened in the right order — and good tempo makes it repeatable.
Measure the shift you can't feel
Weight shift is subtle and easy to misjudge from the inside — a swing that feels like a big move often barely shifts at all. ProSwing AI tracks your body through the swing and flags when your hips slide instead of rotate or your pressure hangs back, then gives targeted drills. Recording a few swings shows you exactly where your low point and hip motion are, so you can confirm the shift is really happening.
