How to Hit Your Driver Straighter
The driver is the hardest club in the bag to hit straight — it's the longest, has the least loft, and swings the fastest, so it magnifies every flaw in your face and path. The upside: a few setup and sequence changes clean up most tee-shot misses without rebuilding your swing.
First, understand the ball-flight laws
Two things decide where your drive goes:
- The clubface at impact mostly determines your starting direction.
- The path relative to that face determines the curve. Face open to the path = slice; closed to it = hook.
So "hitting it straighter" really means squaring the face and matching the path to it. Everything below serves that goal.
Fix the setup — driver is its own animal
Most tee-shot problems start before you swing:
- Tee it high, ball forward. Play the ball off your lead heel with about half the ball above the crown at address. This lets you catch it on a slight upswing.
- Widen your stance slightly wider than shoulder-width for a stable base.
- Tilt away from the target. A little spine tilt so your trail shoulder sits below the lead one pre-sets an upward strike.
Swing keys that straighten the driver
1. Hit up on it (positive attack angle)
Unlike irons, you want to catch the driver slightly on the way up. That adds distance and reduces spin — and the forward ball position plus tilt you set above make it happen naturally. Feel like your chest stays behind the ball through impact.
2. Sequence from the ground up
At driver speed, an arms-first downswing throws the club over the top and produces the big slice. Start down by shifting into your lead side and letting the hips rotate — the same weight shift that powers every good swing. Hips lead, hands follow.
3. Control the face
If your stock shot is a slice, the face is likely open at impact. A slightly stronger grip and a fuller release will square it up — the full breakdown is in how to stop slicing the golf ball. Match a square face to an in-to-out path and the driver turns from a slice into a soft draw.
4. Swing smooth, not hard
Trying to crush it wrecks sequence and face control. A driver swung at 85% with good tempo flies straighter and often farther than an all-out lunge. Keep your 3:1 tempo.
Check your path and face on video
The driver's speed hides what's really happening — you can't feel a two-degree face or an out-to-in path. Recording removes the guesswork. ProSwing AI breaks your driver swing into phases and gives AI coaching on your setup tilt, sequencing, and release, so you can confirm whether that "smoother, up-on-it" feeling is actually showing up. Track a few tee shots and you'll see the start line and curve tighten for real.
